Vinyl Tiling: What kind of materials used?

Underfloor heating is no longer a novelty today. Water, electric, infrared heating systems are used by many residents of suburban real estate. They are also in demand (except for water heating) in the apartment version of multi-story housing. The advantages of these systems are the ability to properly distribute heat in the room, there is no need to wear slippers, hidden solutions that exclude a violation of the aesthetics of the interior. And the decorative part of the vinyl tiling floor can be matched according to the preferences of the homeowners.

Constant experiments in the field of finishing materials force competing manufacturers to be “in good shape”, and buyers get the opportunity to find a finish that best suits their needs. Vinyl tiling has helped to combine the best characteristics of parquet and linoleum, in some ways surpassing materials.

What does a multi-layer material consist of?

Let’s list in the direction from bottom to top, which is included in the finishing products.

Adhesive substance (not available in all types of vinyl tiling assortment);

The substrate that increases the thermal insulation effect (not available everywhere);

The base is made of polyvinyl chloride, to which crumb from hard, natural materials has been added to increase wear resistance;

Fiberglass. Its task is to increase the indicators of mechanical strength to ensure tensile and bending resistance;

Optical fiber. Creates light reflection, which improves the visual option in the perception of the material;

Decorative layer. A printed picture in color creates a pattern on the material;

Protective PVC interlayer. Prevents rapid wear and deep damage to vinyl tiling;

Polyurethane layer

In order to exclude the loss of color of the material when it hits the surface of daylight, it is processed with UF rays.

Tiling material types depending on the choice of installation

PVC laminate is offered in 4 variations:

1.With lock connection. Requires bringing the base to a level state over the entire floor area;

2.With glue fit. A special compound is needed for vinyl tiling. The longest method of installation, which is considered one-time. If one of the decorative elements is damaged, it is impossible to replace it;

3.On a self-adhesive backing. Completely finished dies, which are firm enough to attach to the “rough” floor. The fixing agent is applied over the entire area of the product;

4.With smart tape. The most efficient method of shaping the floor. The adhesive strips quickly attach the modules to the substrate. Re-bonding is not allowed, as the adhesion rate of the joint is significantly reduced.

Heated vinyl tiling: the benefits

When heated, the material does not emit harmful components, which confirms its harmlessness.

Actively conserves heat, increasing the comfort of being in the room. Heats up quickly enough when the structure of the heating floors is activated.

The material is form-stable: the recommended heating temperature is + 25 … + 28˚С. The material is non-conductive, so an electrical heating system can be used. Due to its own ability to accumulate heat, the temperature at the finishing part will increase by several degrees.

The vinyl tiling is antistatic. It is used with water, electric, infrared heating systems.

Stain resistance, water neutrality is very important for the kitchen and children’s room.

A significant line of solutions with imitation of natural materials.

Layout schemes taking into account various materials of the “rough” floor

Water heating on a concrete floor slab. First, a waterproofing material is placed, pipes are placed on it, and a coupler is poured on top. The floors are aligned, after which the PVC laminate is mounted. It is not possible to connect to the central heating system in an apartment building.

Electric heating on a concrete slab. The cable is laid on the “rough” floor, the next layer is a cement-polymer screed under the finish coating. This option is convenient, it is done more quickly than the previous one, but it will require an increase in utility costs.

The infrared foil will also help to quickly carry out additional heating. It is suitable only for PVC laminate of the lock type of laying. No intermediate layers are required: the thermally conductive film is rolled over the leveled concrete with a vinyl tiling covering above it.

For wooden floors of a private building, you can choose a water heating system. Pipes are placed between vertically installed logs, a plywood substrate with a thickness of 1 cm or more is installed on them, and a vinyl tiling is placed on top. The electrical circuit is unacceptable here due to poor fire resistance.

Vinyl tiling for heated floors is recommended for children’s rooms, bathrooms, baths, saunas.

Certain restrictions for underfloor heating

In work, materials with foam layers must not be used.

The stock of laminate flooring for direct mounting is 5-8%, and for diagonal mounting it exceeds 10%.

It is important for the substrate that it has a minimum heat transfer resistance.

Do not place furniture without legs, carpet on the surface of the internal floor heating.

You can only trust proven brands that have appropriate quality checks of the materials themselves and their characteristics during operation. Buying little-known brands will lead to unexpected consequences in the form of a lack of environmental friendliness, softening of the topcoat, and other problems that prevent full use of the heated surface underfoot.

Fixation without an adhesive base

PVC laminate can be positioned as a “floating” floor covering. With this laying technology, the elements are not attached to the base of the floor, but are connected into a single canvas using locks and striped smart tapes. When the building shrinks, thermal expansion, the floor does not crack, because it has a movable structure. Installation is carried out from the corner of the room, the plate is placed with a shift in relation to the previous analogue. Edging products are located at a distance of up to 1 cm from the surface of the vertical wall.

A little about the substrate

When glued, it is not required, but if you organize a “floating floor”, then it is simply necessary. The type of material is selected based on the wishes for its naturalness, thickness and price factor.

The underlay removes the unevenness of the “rough” floor remaining after leveling. It enhances the thermal insulating function, reduces noise from movement, and has a shock-absorbing effect in places of point and volumetric loads.

When the subfloor is flat enough and the warmth of the vinyl tiling is sufficient for a room that is heavily heated by radiators, you can skip the underlay.

Classification by use

The finishing material is chosen depending on the purpose. In apartments and offices with a small number of employees, they purchase products of 23-31 class of abrasion, which will last at least 10 years.

Commercial establishments need a more durable coating, so a vinyl tiling with a 32-42 class of wear resistance has been developed for them. Its service life is 15-20 years.

Special coating that can withstand heavy loads – 43 class vinyl dies. It is suitable for public buildings, sports facilities. It is used without replacement for 20-25 years.

Using modern vinyl tiling, you will find that the material is chip-resistant, warm enough even without a heating system, resilient, and not slippery. It is not afraid of moisture, retains its properties when heated by the sun’s rays, and allows different types of styling. A strong, well-imitating wood structure, is pleasant to look at and functional to use.
