Accommodation – 6 Options that fit your budget

Accommodation, traveling is a pleasure, no one can deny it. Organizing the trip, however, is a whole other story! There are so many things to prepare that, sometimes, for lack of time (or desire) we end up leaving everything at the last minute, spending much more than we had anticipated.

Booking flights, visits and excursions, packing your bags, organizing transport and accommodation… at first thought it seems like a gigantic undertaking. The important thing is to take one step at a time: if you have already chosen your destination and booked your flights, the next goal is to find accommodation.

The best thing you can do before starting your research is to set your maximum budget, so as to avoid any nasty surprises with prices. The budget, of course, depends on you: you decide how much you want to spend. With Spaces, you can save some money from your main checking account to make sure you don’t use it before you travel. It’s very simple: just create a space, give it a name and drag the amount you want to save for your holiday.

Organizing the trip: What type of accommodation is within my budget?

When setting your budget, it is important to take into consideration not only the overall cost of living in the destination you have chosen but also the type of accommodation you are looking for. However, we can assure you that whichever destination you choose for an overnight stay, you will find at least a handful of accommodation options to suit your needs. Unless you decide to leave for a remote location in the Sahara desert, of course.

We have prepared a selection of alternatives to help you choose the accommodation that best suits you and your next adventure. We have put them in order of price, from the most expensive to the cheapest. And, believe it or not, the last option is totally free! Let’s find out together.

1. Sweet hotel, for a carefree overnight stay

Yes, the first option we propose is not a surprise. Let’s talk about the classic hotel: certainly the most comfortable option, but also the most expensive one. The hotel is ideal for those who want a holiday of total relaxation, as all basic services, such as room cleaning, room service, restaurant, and security service, are conveniently included. We recommend this option for those traveling alone or as a couple, for short overnight stays and city breaks.

2. Aparthotel, the best compromise between apartment and hotel

This option combines the comfort of a hotel and the freedom of an apartment. It’s almost like renting an apartment, but without a fixed contract. The aparthotel is ideal for long stays, for example, if you are planning to spend two weeks on a beach, and especially if you are traveling with a group of friends or family.

Most of the apart-hotels offer services such as swimming pools, restaurants, and private security services. And guess what? You won’t have to worry about making the bed, as cleaning is included in the service. The price range is similar to that of a hotel, but when it comes to large groups it can be an affordable option.

3. Air bed & breakfast

Yes, it was a turning point for us too when we understood where this name comes from! Airbnb was created by two guys who, to earn some extra money, rented an air mattress on the floor of their apartment.

A few years have passed since then. Today, this popular platform offers different types of vacation rental, apartments, or private rooms at affordable prices, although the cost can vary depending on the type of accommodation you choose. The most interesting thing is that you can complete the entire booking process via the app, directly from your smartphone, and immediately find yourself in direct contact with the owner. This option is ideal for couples and groups because, just like an aparthotel, it offers more freedom than a hotel.

4. Pensions, so as not to give up a familiar touch

From a certain point of view, a guesthouse looks a lot like a hotel. However, it is a much more familiar environment, available at a lower price. Usually, this type of accommodation offers more limited amenities (don’t expect, for example, to find a swimming pool to dive into or a restaurant to dine in). On the other hand, while not having the elegance of a hotel, the guesthouses make up for it with their more intimate atmosphere. Let’s put it this way: if you decide to stay overnight in a guesthouse, you will have the opportunity to chat with the owners and receive valuable advice from the locals.

Plus, of course, you can enjoy the privacy and comfort of your private room, without having to pay extra for luxury amenities. If you’re planning on hanging out all day, a pension is perfect for recharging your batteries at the end of the day. In short, the ideal option for couples who want to save.

5. Cheap and easy-going hostels

Thanks to their low prices, hostels have always been the favorite destination for backpackers. Some hostels also offer single or double rooms, but the most common accommodation when staying in a hostel is a place in a dormitory. The bathrooms are often shared. Usually in the building, there is also a kitchen where you can prepare your own meals if you want to save on restaurant prices. In short, hostels offer you a relaxed environment and the opportunity to meet new friends, especially if you decide to travel alone.

A recommendation: since this is one of the cheapest options out there, there is a risk that some hostels are not of, say, top quality. Cheap? Absolutely. Hygienic? Fingers crossed. We, therefore, recommend that you read some reviews before booking.

6. Couchsurfing, or how to be hosted for free and travel without spending a penny

Finding something cheaper than Couchsurfing is impossible, as this option is completely free! Through the Couchsurfing platform it is possible to get in touch with people who offer a free place to sleep in their home, generally the sofa (in English couch, hence the name of the service).

It is a perfect way to meet new people, find out more about the local culture and, above all, be hosted for free and therefore not spend a penny on accommodation. Through your host (the landlord), you will have the opportunity to experience a destination exactly as a local does. It is an experience that must be tried at least once in a lifetime! Keep in mind though that while CouchSurfing is suitable for all budgets, not everyone likes it. You just have to try it and tell us what you think!

Traveling is a pleasure, not a sacrifice. Now that you have read our tips, plan your trip in advance by adapting it to your budget and you will see that you will not have to spend a single $$ more than expected for accommodation. Good fun!
