Totness Inn was established by Thomas Liddle in 1860. John and Catherine Schofield acquired the lease in 1865 and although John died in 1869, his widow ran the hotel until 1897: 28 years was one of the most remarkable hotel tenancies of the era. The building was single storey throughout this period, but in 1918, the second storey was added, with further substantial renovations in the 1980s.
