Established by John Stanley in 1853, the hotel is near an important crossing of the River Onkaparinga at Verdun. The original bridge - which presumably replaced a ford - was opened in August 1857 by Stanley's daughter and as the bridge acquired the family name, so the name of the hotel changed from Ford Inn to Stanley Bridge Inn. The Tavern has recently been extensively refurbished.
