Milang was an important port on the Murray River system; its first hotel, the Lake, was established some distance from the shore of Lake Alexandrina in 1856. The Pier was commenced in the same year, having an excellent view of the lake and being in closer proximity to the wharf, but it wasn't licensed until 1867. As rail and road transport replaced paddle steamers and barges, Milang became redundant as a port and in 1934 the Lake was de-licensed. Milang is now a restful, historic lakeside tourist destination situated between the vineyards of Langhorne Creek and the bustling South Coast Tourist towns.
