The licence of the current Mt Torrens Hotel was acquired in 1862 from premises in Barton Springs about 2 km west of the town, having been used at two premises at Barton Springs; the first, the Cornish Arms was established by George Dunn in 1848. (The original hotel was actually the Dunn home, Barton Springs.) The name was changed to Mt Torrens Inn in 1850, and was retained when the licence was moved to the current premises in the town proper.
