Established by James Thomson, the founder of Balhannah, in 1840, the hotel was called 'Golden Cross' from 1850 until 1938, when it was renamed 'Balhannah', Hannah being the name of both Thomson's mother and sister. Like many old country hotels, the Balhannah has been enlarged over the years - and in recent years many of the small rooms have been opened up, but the single storey, split-level structure has been retained.
